Kodomo Jidai or Childhood in Japanese is a documentary and alternative processes project made during my Studio Kura Art Residency in Itoshima Japan.
The project surrounds a young girl named Koharu in her everyday life in the beautiful farmland of Itoshima in Southern Japan. In Koharu’s world, nature and people are one. Crabs talk to humans, leaves move like humans do, drawing in the sand can make people homes, and mountains sing like no other.
Kodomo Jidai was photographed using a digital Fujifilm camera and later crafted on cyanotypes made using leaves, flowers, and insects from Koharu’s adventures in Itoshima.
This was showcased at the Studio Kura Gallery Show at the end of the residency in August 2024.
